Hanoi (VNA) – Asuspected Islamic militant slashed a police officer with a sickle whenlaunching an attack on an Indonesian police station in Sarabaya, the country’ssecond biggest city on August 17.
The suspect was shot andtaken into custody, according to East Java police spokesman.
The 30-year-old man enteredthe police station and assaulted two police officers on duty. The police officer who was slashed is being treatedin hospital while the other suffered a bruised face.
National Police spokesman IqbalAlqudusy said the suspect appeared to have been acting alone and becameradicalised by reading material posted online by Aman Abdurahman, a militantwho was sentenced to death last year for masterminding a string of deadlyattacks across Indonesia.
Abdurahman is considered theideological leader of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a loose grouping of IslamicState sympathisers in Indonesia.
Indonesia, which is the world'sbiggest Muslim-majority country, is grappling with a resurgence in militancy. The governmentscrambled to tighten its anti-terrorism laws after a series of suicidebombings linked to JAD cells killed more than 30 people in Surabaya lastyear.
Police last monthsaid authorities had arrested a suspected militant plotting bomb attacks on Indonesia’s Independence Day (August 17) in West Sumatra. –VNA
