Strong earthquake hits Indonesia’s Moluccas Islands

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Moluccas Islands on the morning of March 24, according to the US Geological Survey.
Hanoi (VNA) - A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's MoluccasIslands on the morning of March 24, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck in the sea, 147 km (92 miles) northwest of the city of Ternateand at a depth of 76.5 km.
This was the second quake hitting Indonesia in the same morningas hours earlier, a 5.4-magnitude quake struck the island of Sulawesi.

There were no immediate tsunami warnings and no immediatereports of damage from both quakes.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity dueto its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic platescollide.

Last September, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu onSulawesi island killed more than 2,200, with a thousand more declared missing.

On December 26, 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province, causinga tsunami and killing more than 170,000 in Indonesia.-VNA
