The province is striving to plant 35,000 hectares offorest in the next five years and develop special use forests,protective forests and productive forests. By 2020, 55 percent of theprovince’s land will be aforested, an annual increase of 1.43 percent.
Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Lo MaiKien said 86,292 hectares will be zoned off for special use forests,398,710 hectares for protective forests and 439,310 hectares forproductive forests.
He added that forest planning and development will be carried out along the Da River, mountainous areas and border areas.
Theinitiatives aim to serve the demand of population expansion andeconomic growth, protect the Son La hydroelectric plant and irrigationsystem and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Theprovincial blueprint on forest planning and development also coversraising public awareness of the forest protection law, controllingforest exploitation and decreasing the damage caused by forest fires.-VNA
