Singaporean President Halimah Yacob (Photo: AFP/VNA)Singapore (VNA) – Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob has laid out the key prioritiesfor the rest of this government’s term at the opening of the second session ofthe 14th parliament on April 10.
This will be her last address for her current term of thepresidency before the next presidential election due in September this year.
Singapore mustensure a broader and more open meritocracy that works well for allSingaporeans, the President said, adding that it is necessary to rethink thecountry's approach to education and employment.
Halimah saidthat meritocracy has provided opportunities, but as the country prospers,those who have already done well will naturally seek to pass on theiradvantages to their children.
ThePresident said Singapore must re-examine how society rewards different skillsand talents, and accord greater value to those with the social and empathetictraits to excel in jobs such as caregiving or community service.
Support for the disadvantaged and vulnerable segments in society will be stepped up sothey can pursue their aspirations, she said.
In additionto the above-mentioned priorities, the government’s agenda also includesstrengthening social safety nets, building a smart and liveable city anddeepening Singaporeans’ sense of shared identity and mutual responsibilitytowards one another.
According toher, the government will improve social safety nets to help Singaporeans bettercope with disruptions and setbacks in life in a world of rapid change.
Singaporewill take better care of the growing number of seniors, through programmeslike HealthierSG, enhancing retirement adequacy and expanding care and livingoptions for them.
It will alsokeep public housing affordable and accessible for Singaporeans, she said./.
