Singapore (VNA) – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a high-speed rail (HSR) project connecting Singapore and Malaysia was signed by the two countries on July 19.

Singapore Transport Minister and Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure Khaw Boon Wan and Malaysian Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Adbul Rahman Dahlan inked the MoU in the witness of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak.

In an announcement on July 18, the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said the MoU is a significant milestone and testament to the two nations’ close bilateral cooperation. When completed, the HSR will boost connectivity, strengthen economic ties and forge closer people-to-people linkages between the two countries.

First unveiled by the two Prime Ministers in February 2013, the 350 km long rail line, which has an investment capital of 10 billion USD, is expected to cut travel time between Singapore and Malaysia’s capital of Kula Lumpur to 90 minutes from the current 6-7 hours by rail or 4-5 hours by car.-VNA
