The project, expected to cost 40 million USD to be sourcedfrom non-refundable aid from the Green Climate Fund, aims to help farmerhouseholds to switch their livelihoods to those more resilient to climatechange as well as enhancing the involvement of farmers in flood-based valuechains, focusing on selected areas in the region most heavily affected byflooding.
Anjali Acharya – senior environment expert for World Bank,which provides trustee services for the GCF – said the first component of theproject is to support the implementation of policies regarding resilience toclimate change, while the second component will expand climate changeresilience for inter-provincial projects. The third component focuses onmanagement and supervision.
The Mekong Delta provinces of Dong Thap, Long An, and TienGiang are building a connectivity project for sustainable development in the DongThap Muoi sub-region, with a focus on developing signature farm produce brands,ecological tourism, transportation infrastructure, irrigation, water and powersupply in rural areas, spatial planning, water resources management, regionalinformation system, and regional policymaking.
As part of the project, Dong Thap is asking ministries,agencies, and the World Bank to help support the livelihoods of residents inlandslide-hit areas, develop craft villages combined with tourism services, andbuild a smart irrigation system.–VNA
