Seoul (VNA) –The Republic of Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company (HyundaiE&C) on September 21 won acontract for the construction of the No. 1 section of the North-South CommuterRailway project worth 573 million USD in thePhilippines.
The railway extends 52km from Malalos, north of capital Manila, to Clark. The project has five packages. The section that HyundaiE&C is building covers two ground-level stations and a 17km elevatedbridge. Completion is expected to take 48 months.
Through the project, the Government of the Philippines aimsto improve accessibility in the country by shortening the travel time betweenManila and Clark. It also hopes to solve the traffic congestion issue in thecapital region and decrease travel expenses as well as carbon dioxideemissions.
The opening of the railway is expected to help the localtourism industry by creating jobs in system operation./.
