Seoul (VNA) – Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea (RoK) KangKyung-wha met ASEAN chief Lim Jock Hoi in Seoul on September 17 to discuss waysto strengthen cooperation with ASEAN members in implementing the country’sNew Southern Policy.
Minister Kang asked for the Secretary-General’s active role in strengtheningthe RoK-ASEAN partnership as well as cooperation from the ASEAN Secretariat onfostering cooperation among ASEAN members in order to see more cooperation intransport, water resources, energy, and information technology.
The RoK minister expressed her hope for close cooperation with ASEAN membercountries to successfully organise the ASEAN-RoK Commemorative Summit that willbe held in the RoK next year.
ASEAN Secretary-General Lim, for his part, spoke highly of the RoK government’scommitment to elevating its relations with ASEAN to a much higher level throughthe New Southern Policy.
He expressed his hope that the two sides will hold the ASEAN-RoK CommemorativeSummit successfully, and further step up cooperation in people-to-peopleexchanges, trade, investment, and IT.
The ASEAN chief also took note of thepositive changes in the situation on the Korean Peninsula this year, and hopedthat many accomplishments would be attained at the inter-Korean summit to beheld on September 18.-VNA
