Can Tho (VNA) – The Mekong Delta City of Can Thoexpects to collect about 1,100 blood units in this year’s nationwide blooddonation campaign “Hanh Trinh Do” (Red Journey) held in the city on June 17.
The amount of blood is expected to exceed the goal of 800blood units set for each city and province during the campaign.
Thousands of people, including many soldiers andstudents, have donated their blood during the event named “Sac Do Tay Do” (RedColour of Tay Do) which was held in the city for six consecutive years.
This year’s event attracted a large number of high-schooland undergraduate students from across the city; many of whom have taken partin the campaign every year since it was launched in 2013, said President of CanTho’s Red Cross Society Huynh Thanh Thao.
They have inspired the love for other beings and sense ofresponsibility among the young people and further expanded the campaign, sheadded.
In the morning the same day, the Red Cross Society of CanTho, organiser of Red Journey campaign and representatives from BIDV visitedand presented gifts to 15 impoverished patients suffering from congenitalhemolytic anemia in the city’s Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital.
“Red Journey” is a cross-country campaign initiated bythe National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation and the NationalInstitute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in 2013, aiming to raise publicawareness of the need for blood donation as well as thalassaemia, a geneticblood disorder that can lead to heart failure and liver problems, and toaddress the shortage of blood for medical use.
Last year, the campaign collected over 38,000 blood unitsnationwide.-VNA
