Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung arrived in Kuala Lumpur on August 7, beginning his two-day official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of his Malaysian counterpart Najib Rajak.

The visit aims to promote and deepen bilateral comprehensive cooperation, especially in trade, labour, energy, agriculture, education, sci-technology, tourism and defence-security.

The Vietnamese and Malaysian leaders will also take the occasion to compare notes on common concerns.

Vietnam and Malaysia set up diplomatic ties in 1973 and signed a joint statement on the comprehensive cooperation framework in the 21st century in 2004. The bilateral relationship has continually developed in various fields including politics, economy, defence and security.

Their high-ranking leaders have exchanged a number of visits, especially President Truong Tan Sang’s Malaysia visit in September 2011 and the Malaysian King’s visit to Vietnam in March 2009.

Malaysia is now one of Vietnam’s ten largest trade partners with stable trade growth every year, hitting nearly 3.1 billion USD in the first five months of this year.

By April 2015, Malaysia was operating nearly 500 projects worth 11 billion USD in Vietnam, ranking eighth among countries and territories investing in the country. Meanwhile Vietnam has 11 valid projects in Malaysia with a combined capital of over 800 million USD, focusing on oil and gas exploitation.

Connections in other fields between the two nations have also seen strong development and brought about fruitful achievements.

Vietnam and Malaysia signed a number of bilateral cooperation documents, including investment promotion and protection agreements and an agreement on maritime cooperation, among others in economy, sci-technology, tourism, culture and education.-VNA
