Hanoi (VNA) - Preparations for the election of deputies to the 14th National Assembly and People’s Councils for 2016-2020 are being conducted in line with the law and progressing smoothly, according to the National Election Council (NEC)’s Office.
The office set up 184 boards in 63 cities and provinces nationwide to supervise the election of NA deputies, and 84,083 boards were established to oversee the election of deputies to People’s Councils at all levels.
After the second consultative conference, which took place on March 17, an anticipated list of 1,146 candidates, including 197 from centrally run agencies and organisations and 154 self-nominated candidates, are running for positions in the 14 th legislature.
A preliminary list of 7,522 candidates for all-level People’s Councils was also adopted. Of these, 74 nominated themselves.
Between March 10 and 18, the NA Standing Committee dispatched six working groups to 16 centrally run cities and provinces to supervise preparations for the general election there.
The NEC has urged agencies and localities to collect feedback from voters in candidates’ residential areas from now through April 12 in line with the law, organise the third consultative conference, and issue a resolution on the final list of candidates. The number of women and ethnic minorities represented must be in line with the law on the election of deputies.
It also called for efforts to increase communication work in order to popularise the election – especially the list of candidates – and ensure security, social order and safety during the event.
The third consultation round is set to be organised from April 13 to 17 in order to decide the official list of candidates for the legislative election.
The election of deputies to the 14th NA and all-level People’s Councils of the 2016-2021 tenure will convene on May 22, a Sunday, as in line with the law.-VNA
