Siem Reap (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with his Cambodiancounterpart Samdech Techno Hun Sen on the sidelines of the third Mekong River Commission (MRC) Summitin Siem Reap, Cambodia, on April 4.
Welcoming PM Phuc and his entourage to Cambodia for the thirdMRC Summit, Cambodia PM Hun Sen said he believes the participation of theVietnamese delegation will contribute to the event’s success.
The PM Phuc,for his part, expressed his delight to visit Cambodia when Chol Chnam Thmay,the New Year festival of Cambodia, is approaching. He said Cambodia’s hostingof the MRC Summit and the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting inJanuary has contributed to raise the country’s role and position in the region.
He reiteratedVietnam’s consistent policy in relations with Cambodia, saying Vietnam wants tocontinue stepping up friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Cambodia.
The two leaderssaid they are pleased with the strong development of the two countries’relations in recent years and showed their determination to deepen bilateralties and bring their partnership to a new height.
They highlyappreciated the two countries’ signing a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreementand the minutes of the meeting of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee on LandBorder Demarcation and Marker Planting on the sidelines of the sixth GreaterMekong Subregion (GMS-6) and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam DevelopmentTriangle Summit (CLV-10) which took place in Hanoi last week.
They agreed tomaintain the exchange of high-level visits and coordinate in organising the 16thmeeting of the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee on Economic, Cultural andScientific-Technological Cooperation in Hanoi on May 16-18.
The two PMsexchanged views on issues of mutual concern, including border issues andVietnamese people in Cambodia.
They consented towork together to settle issues related to the legal status of Vietnamese peoplein Cambodia on the basis of Cambodian law.
PM Phuc is inCambodia for the third MRC Summit. He is scheduled to attend the opening session of the summit and meet withoverseas Vietnamese people in Cambodia to extend his Chol Chnam Thmay greetings on April 5.
This year’s MRC Summit, themed “Joint Efforts and Partnershiptowards Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Mekong”, willcreate an opportunity for countries to review the operation of the MRC over thepast four years and work to realise sustainable development goals.
The first eventof its kind opened in Hua Hin,Thailand in 2010 and thesecond one took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 2014.-VNA
