KualaLumpur (VNA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad believes thatMalaysia stands to benefit from the trade war between the US and China, eventhough the conflict has triggered concerns over a global economic slowdown.
The New Straits Times quoted the PM as saying that while the trade war couldhave a negative impact on Malaysia, there were certain advantages as the US’sloss in the Chinese market could open up opportunities for Malaysia.
The US’s inability to use China as a manufacturing base could see it turn toother countries, including Malaysia, he said, adding that Malaysia and other ASEANcountries must be prepared to handle the negative impact and adapt to change.
According to the Malaysian leader, ASEAN is not strong enough to tell China orthe US to stop this trade war as it will not benefit them.
ASEAN needs to find a way to adapt to the effects of the trade war in thisregion, so that its economy is not badly hit,” he said.-VNA
