Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phucrecently approved a plan to enhance communications about Vietnam’sinternational integration through major events from 2017 to 2020.

From now to 2020, Vietnam will hold severalimportant international positions such as host of the APEC Year 2017, Chair ofASEAN in 2020 and is a candidate for non-permanent membership of the UNSecurity Council for 2020-2021.

It is also set to fulfill major internationalcommitments, including commitments to the World Trade Organisation in 2018, andto sign, ratify and implement many new-generation free trade agreements (FTAs).

Stronger communications are expected to helpraise society’s awareness, especially among businesses, of internationalagreements, particularly opportunities, challenges and requirements that mustbe satisfied when the country implements new-generation FTAs.

Under the plan, agencies need to boostcommunication activities during APEC Vietnam 2017 to show the country as adynamic nation that is creating new momentum for regional growth andconnectivity, and to reflect the hospitality of Vietnamese people.

Communications about the ASEAN Community shouldfocus on the 50th founding anniversary of ASEAN and Vietnam’s 22-yearmembership in ASEAN in 2017, 25 years of Vietnam’s ASEAN membership and thecountry’s role as the ASEAN Chair in 2020 and the three pillars of the ASEANCommunity.

Meanwhile, the content, opportunities andchallenges of the FTAs Vietnam has joined or is going to sign will bepopularised, including FTAs with the Republic of Korea, the EU and the EurasianEconomic Union, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement.

The newly approved plan also requires strongerdissemination of Vietnam’s performance as a member of UN organisations such asthe UN Economic and Social Council in 2016-2018 and the UNESCO ExecutiveCouncil in 2015-2019. The country’s participation in UN peacekeeping operationswill also be popularised under the plan, promoting Vietnam’s image as an activeand responsible member of the international community.-VNA
