Phu Yen (VNA) – The steering committee on human disease prevention of coastal central Phu Yen province launched a public campaign against dengue fever and Zika virus on April 10.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phan Dinh Phung urged locals to take necessary precautions against the diseases and eliminate mosquitos and mosquito larvae in their homes and workplaces.
He requested communes and districts to launch their own campaigns in a bid to prevent outbreaks of the diseases from occurring.
The ceremony was followed by a parade by more than 200 local youths along main streets of Tuy Hoa city.
The steering committee also had a field trip to the medical station of the city’s Binh Kien commune to examine dengue fever control work and learn about mosquito killing measures taken by several households in the city.
According to Director of the provincial Department of Health Nguyen Thi Mong Ngoc, Khanh Hoa, the neighbouring province of Phu Yen, has reported the first case of Zika virus, putting Phu Yen at higher risk.
In March, the number of dengue fever cases in the province chopped by 50 percent from February to still more than 1,000 cases but no casualty has been reported so far, she said.-VNA
