Philippines, US hold naval exercises

Troops from the Philippines and the US on June 26 began their annual 20th military drill “Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training” (CARAT)in the former.

It is part of a broader bilateral exerciseseries the US Navy conducts with nine partner navies in South andSoutheast Asia.

This year's CARAT Philippines will focus oncombined operations at sea, amphibious landings, diving and salvage, andmaritime patrol and reconnaissance flights.

Exercises will beheld in several locations ashore and at sea, including Subic Bay, SanAntonio in the northern Filipino province of Zambales, Sangley Point inCavite City and Ternate in western Philippines.

In a statement,the US embassy said CARAT exercises are aimed at addressing sharedmaritime security priorities, strengthening maritime partnership andenhancing interoperability among participants.-VNA

Indonesia begins major oil, gas exploration in Sulawesi

Indonesia's state-owned oil company Pertamina, along with foreign partners Sinopec from China and Kuwait’s Kufpec, has signed a contract to explore the Melati oil and gas block, located off the coast of Sulawesi. The block is estimated to contain trillions of cubic feet of gas reserves.
