Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippines will push forwards six priorities as it takes over the rotatingchairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2017, whichalso coincides with the bloc’s 50th founding anniversary, officials have said.
PresidentialCommunications Secretary Martin Andanar said at a press conference on January 5that the priorities include a people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN; peaceand stability in the region; maritime security and cooperation; inclusiveinnovation and growth; and ASEAN as a model of regionalism and a global player.
The theme of ASEAN2017 is “We are partners for change, engaging the world”, Andanar added.
Meanwhile,Undersecretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Enrique Manalo, said themilestone event is an occasion for ASEAN to reflect on its success andachievements during the last 50 years and to prepare for new challenges aheadin the region.
He noted that,to carry out the ASEAN 2017 priorities, the Philippines will be hosting around 100meetings throughout selected cities and regions of the country.-VNA
