Philippines, Japan agree to strengthen bilateral ties

The Philippines and Japan have agreed to resume the politic-military and maritime dialogue this year.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines and Japan have agreed to resume thepolitic-military and maritime dialogue this year.

The statement was made on February 10 after a meeting between PhilippineForeign Secretary Teodor Locsin and visiting Japanese Foreign Minister TaroKono.

The two countries share the view that they resume Japan-Philippines politic-militarydialogue and the maritime dialogue at an early date this year, Japanese ForeignMinister Taro Kono said in Davao city, southern the Philippines.

The two sides pledged to deepen maritime security cooperation.

Locsin, for his part, said the governments of the Philippines and Japan acknowledgedthat keeping and promoting the region's peace and stability is a collectiveresponsibility; one that must be underpinned by mutual trust, sincere dialogue,and functional cooperation.

FM Kono is scheduled to call on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and other Cabinetofficials while in Davao, according to the Philippine Foreign Ministry.

The three-day official visit to the Philippines from February 9 by FM Taro Konois a testament to the strengthened strategic partnership between thePhilippines and Japan, and an affirmation of the longstanding bilateralfriendship. - VNA
