Vietnamese peppercorns (Photo: VNA)HCMCity (VNA) – Peppercorn export has experienced a decline in both valueand volume in the first two months of 2017, according to the Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development.
Duringthe period, Vietnam shipped overseas 16,000 tonnes of peppercorns for 112million USD, down 19.8 percent in volume and 36.3 percent in value compared tolast year.
Businessinsiders attributed the reduction to a global oversupply trend.
Vietnamhas seen a surge in the number of the pepper growers following increasingpeppercorns prices in recent years.
Thecountry accounts for 50 percent of the global peppercorns for trade, thus itsgrowing yield is likely to diminish prices on the global market.
Currently,domestic peppercorn prices are under 120,000 VND (5.27 USD) per kg, about35,000 VND (1.5 USD) less than that of the same period last year.
DoHa Nam, head of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), said the prices stillbring profit for growers, and are higher than that of other industrial plants,such as coffee and rubber trees.
