Party leader visits China’s Guangdong province

Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited Guangdong province – considered as China’s gateway to the world, especially Southeast Asia – as part of his current official visit to the neighbouring country.

In his meeting with Weng Yang, Politburo member and Secretary ofthe Party Committee of Guangdong province, Party General SecretaryTrong highly valued Guangdong province’s important position and rolein China ’s development, saying that it is the leading locality and asuccessful symbol of China ’s open-door reform process.

Alongwith the common development of Vietnam-China relations, Guangdongprovince has set up cooperative ties with Vietnamese localities.

Inthe economic field, Vietnam-Guangdong trade has registered a growthrate of 30 percent a year since 2008. Bilateral trade reached 5.83billion USD in 2010 and 3.56 billion USD in the first six months of thisyear.

Guangdong ’s major businesses have cometo Vietnam for cooperation and business, however, economic, tradeand investment ties between the two sides have not yet matched theirpotential.

To boost cooperation between Vietnamese localities andGuangdong , Secretary General Trong urged both sides to promoteexchanges of delegations, helping increase mutual understanding andtrust, and enhance cooperation in economics, trade, investment, scienceand technology.

The Vietnamese leader said he hoped the provincewould always pay attention to preserving Vietnamese historical andcultural relic sites in Guangdong as well as increase education,especially among youths, on the tradition of friendship and cooperationbetween the two countries.

In return, Weng Yang briefed Trong onthe cooperation between his province and Vietnam , affirming hisintention to attach importance to the General Secretary’s measures toenhance relations between the two countries.

The two sides shouldcontinue to work closely together to speed up the project onShenzhen–Hai Phong economic, trade cooperation zone, Weng said,describing it as a symbolic cooperation area between the two localities.

If it performs well it would contribute to attracting firms from Guangdong to cooperate and invest in Vietnam , he said.

Guangdong is restructuring its economy and will encourage high-techenterprises to invest in Vietnam , the provincial party secretaryaffirmed.

Later the day, General Secretary Trong and hisentourage visited the historic area of the Vietnam Revolutionary YouthLeague in Guangzhou city, where the association, the precursor of theVietnam Workers’ Party, was set up and issued policies and decisions forVietnam ’s revolution path 80 years ago.

He laid a floral wreath and offered incense at martyr Pham Hong Thai’s grave at Huang Huagang cemetery in Guangzhou city.

Also the same day, General Secretary Trong and his entourage made a tour of the Panyu energy-saving science and technology area.

The Party chief also met with the staff of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Guangzhou. /.
