Jakarta(VNA) – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited Indonesia’s Centre forStrategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, where he delivered aspeech on the 50 years’ path of ASEAN formation, development and future road.

The Party leader recalledthe traditional friendship between the two countries from the 19th century whenthe Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam send the first envoy to Indonesia to boost tradeties. The relationship has been nurtured and developed. In 2013, the two countriesbecame strategic partners.

Vietnam and Indonesiaare members of ASEAN with many shared interests and similar values, he said,stressing the important role of the bloc as one of the most successful organisationin the world and a dynamic economic regionranking seventh in the world.

The building of theASEAN Community towards a united and solidarity bloc not only benefits membercountries but also other outside states, he said.

The Party chief analysedchallenges facing ASEAN, while pointing out lessons helping the associationsucceed over the past 50 years, including those on dependence, andself-reliance, solidarity and unity as well as the central role in regionalcooperation mechanisms.

In order to realisethe ASEAN Vision 2025, he highlighted the need for the association to successfullybuild the ASEAN Community of solidarity, strength and prosperity, maintain andreinforce regionalpeace and stability, and strengthen partnership with outsidepartners while promoting the central role of the bloc in the regionalarchitecture.

Over the past 22years, Vietnam has exerted every effort to maintain and promote order in SoutheastAsia based on principles of the region and international law, he said.

The Party chief saidthat Vietnam considers the ASEAN as a common home, and prioritises therelations with member countries.

He also expressed his hopethat Vietnam and Indonesia will join hands with other ASEAN members to continueefforts in building the association.

The CSIS is a leadingresearch agency of Indonesia and a member of the ASEAN network of internationalstudy institutions.Throughout over four decades, the CSIS has made importantcontributions to the research of important strategic issues of Indonesia aswell as the region and the world, while making many proposals strengthening mutualunderstanding of regional scholars and people.-VNA
