New Japanese Ambassador to ASEAN vows to boost bilateral ties

Jakarta (VNA) – Newly-accredited Japanese Ambassador to ASEAN Kazuo Sunaga has voiced his hope to work closely with ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat to further enhance ASEAN-Japan relations.

He presented his letter of credentials to ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh on March 31.

The ambassador confirmed that Japan will support the bloc’s efforts to strengthen ASEAN-led mechanisms such as the East Asia Summit.

The diplomat also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to support ASEAN Community-building efforts beyond 2015.

At the meeting, the Secretary-General stressed that both sides need to continue the effective implementation of the Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and its Implementation Plan to forge closer relations.

They exchanged views on regional issues of common interest and concern. Secretary-General Minh spoke on the priorities of ASEAN in 2016, as it is the first year of implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.

Ambassador Kazuo is the fourth Ambassador of Japan accredited to ASEAN since Japan established its Mission to ASEAN in 2011.-VNA
