Netherlands shares experience in smart port development

HaiPhong (VNA) - Opportunities for investing in the northern portcity of Hai Phong and orientations for forming a smart and modern port economy inthe locality were discussed at a workshop on September 21.

Jointlyorganised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam and the municipalPeople’s Committee, the workshop is part of the activities in the on-going “DutchDays” event in Hai Phong on the occasion of the 45th anniversary ofthe Vietnam- Netherlands diplomatic ties.

Dutch participants shared their experience in operating ports in line withsmart and energy-saving models through using natural energy as well asexperience in collecting and recycling packaging materials towards circulatingproduction.

Speaking at the workshop, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s CommitteeNguyen Van Thanh said the city has many advantages, as it is a gateway connectingbetween Vietnam and the world.

Local authorities have built a development plan, focusing on infrastructure systemsand foreign direct investment, he noted.

Investmentfor infrastructure development has contributed to helping Hai Phong create socio-economicbreakthroughs, he said, but also noting that the city are facing great challengesrelated to out-of-sync traffic infrastructure, solid waste treatment, flooding,environmental pollution, and traffic jam.

Dutch Ambassador Elsbeth Akkerman highlighted the strong development ofbilateral relations across various fields, saying that the development has beenbolstered thanks to investment and trade activities of Dutch investors inVietnam.

Thesame day, the diplomat visited the Saigon Newport Corporation (SNC) and the Hai Phong International ContainerTerminal Co., Ltd - a partner of the SNC in Hai Phong.

She also paid a courtesy visit to Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee NguyenVan Tung and officials from local departments and sectors, during which thediplomat affirmed that Hai Phong is one of the strategic destinations inVietnam of Dutch firms which are operating in shipbuilding, maritime andlogistics industry, and smart port development.

There are more and more Dutch enterprises operating in Hai Phong, she said, notingthat port development, logistics and smart urban planning are potential spheresfor the Netherlands and Hai Phong to boost collaboration for mutual benefit.

The Netherlands is willing to share its experience with Vietnam in these fields,she added.-VNA
