National committee for APEC 2017 established

A national committee has been set up to coordinate the organisation of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum hosted by Vietnam in 2017.
A national committee has been set up to coordinate the organisation ofthe Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum hosted by Vietnam in2017.

Led by Deputy Prime Minister and ForeignMinister Pham Binh Minh, the committee consists of five sub-committeesin charge of content, logistics, health and safety, communications andprotocol.

Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Sonand Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Cam Tu serve as theAPEC committee’s vice directors.

According toForeign Minister Pham Binh Minh, hosting the (APEC) forum in 2017 is alynchpin in Vietnam’s foreign policy until 2020, reflecting thecountry’s dedication to the promotion of shared interests in APEC in anevolving regional landscape. The forum includes most of Vietnam’sstrategic and leading economic and trade partners, who account for 78percent of the country’s FDI, 79 percent of total foreign trade and 70percent of incoming tourists.

Established in November1989, APEC now comprises 21 economies, representing around 39 percent ofthe world’s population, 57 percent of total global GDP and 47 percentof international trade.

Since joining theforum in November 1998, Vietnam has made a number of significantcontributions, including the successful organisation of APEC 2006 andthe 6th APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting inSeptember 2014.-VNA
