NA Chairwoman arrives in Siem Reap for APPF-27

Siem Reap (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and thehigh-ranking delegation arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia on January 14 to attend the 27thAnnual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-27) from January 14-16.

The trip is made at the invitation of President of the Cambodian NationalAssembly Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin who doubles as Chairmanof the APPF-27.

The APPF wasestablished on March 15, 1993, with the purpose of building trust amongparliaments in the Asia-Pacific via the enhancement of dialogues betweenregional parliamentarians, thus contributing to regional peace, sustainabilityand prosperity.

It gathers 27 memberparliaments: Australia, Cambodia, Canada, China, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica,Ecuador, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Marshall Islands, Mexico,Micronesia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, theRepublic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, the US, and Vietnam.

Since becoming anAPPF member in January 1995, the Vietnamese NA has actively participated in allactivities of the forum with the first most special event being the hosting ofthe APPF-13 in January 2005 in Ha Long in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Through APPFmeetings, Vietnam’s legislative body made proposals and recommendations to stepup coordination, contribute to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity inthe region, while expanding the forum’s ties with other inter-parliamentaryorganizations in the world.

At the APPF-26 inHanoi from January 18-21, 2018, the Hanoi Declaration was adopted, settingforth a new vision for parliamentary ties towards 2030. It boosted thepartnership between APPF and APEC to realize Asian-Pacific people’s aspirationabout a region of peace and development.

Under the theme“Strengthening parliamentary partnership for peace, security, and sustainabledevelopment”, the APPF-27 will set priority on the goal of safeguarding peace,security and sustainable development.

Through theirattendance at the APPF-27, Vietnamese parliamentarians continue performingtheir proactive involvement in multilateral parliamentary diplomaticactivities, thus heightening the country’s role and position at this forum andjoining in diplomatic efforts for peace, cooperation and development.-VNA
