Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar’s Union Parliament on May 16 approved the appointment of former permanent representative to the United Nations U Kyaw Tint Swe as Minister of the Office of State Counsellor.
U Kyaw Tint Swe is currently a member of the Union Parliament's Legal Affairs and Special Cases Assessment Commission, led by former parliament speaker U Shwe Mann.
The appointment is said to assist State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in carrying out her responsibilities as Minister of Foreign Affairs. She is also Minister of the President's Office.
Myanmar's Union Parliament on May 10 approved the establishment of the office following President U Htin Kyaw’s proposal and the government named U Kyaw Tint Swe as the office’s minister on May 12.
The country’s new government took office on April 1 after the handover of duties of the head of state from U Thein Sein’s previous government had been completed.
It is now operating with 22 ministries, down from 36 in the previous government.-VNA
