Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi on August 15 called for a compromise to achieve long-lasting peace in the country.
Speaking at the opening of the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee (UPDJC) meeting in Nay Pyi Taw, the State Counselor who is also the UPDJC chairperson stated that the lack of peace in the country since independence was due to a failure to meet the needs of people, warning that the situation could lead to an economic collapse.
She highlighted the need to strive for peace without forgetting economic and social development. She also called for trust and solidarity to successfully hold the upcoming 21st Century Panglong Ethnic Conference, which is considered an initial step toward a federal state.
The former Myanmar government and eight ethnic armed groups out of 15 signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord on October 15, 2015.
On the same day, the Myanmar Presidential Office announced that the government has established two committees to monitor and promote special economic zones.
Myanmar currently has three special economic zones, including Kyahu Phyu in Rakhine state, Dawei in Thanintharyi region and Thilawa in Yangon area.-VNA
