Myanmar seizes record amount of crystal meth

Myanmar authorities seized more than 1,700 kg of crystal meth worth nearly 29 million USD in a multi-state operation this week, making it the country’s biggest haul captured since the beginning of 2019.

Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar authorities seized more than 1,700 kg of crystal meth worthnearly 29 million USD in a multi-state operation this week, making it thecountry’s biggest haul captured since the beginning of 2019.

State-runnewspaper Myanmar Alinn reported on March 30 that the crackdown on drugsmugglers started on March 24, when Myanmar Navy stopped a boat with sevenpeople onboard off the coast of Kawthaung township, and found nearly 1,740 kgof high-grade crystal meth.

An anonymousofficial from the National Drug Control Department of Myanmar affirmed that isthe biggest seizure this year.

Authoritiesraided the house of the owner of the drugs in Yangon the next day, arresting hiswife and confiscating seven bank books.

The boat ownerof the seized vessel in western Rakhine state was arrested on March 26.However, the drugs owner is on the run.

Myanmar'smulti-billion-dollar drug industry is believed to outstrip rivals in LatinAmerica, and eastern Shan state is the epicentre of production where a networkof local armed groups link up with transnational trafficking gangs.

Accurateproduction figures are impossible to obtain, but experts said that largeseizures have had no effect on drug prices, suggesting they are only a smallproportion of the total.-VNA
