Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar exported over 559,649 tonnes of rice in the first seven months of the 2016-2017 fiscal year (from April 2016 to March 2017), a reduction of 200,000 tonnes year-on-year, according to the country’s Ministry of Commerce.

About 80 percent of Myanmar’s rice exports went to China, mostly through the trade border. Meanwhile, rice price is descending in the domestic market as the harvesting season comes.

Myanmar can compete with other regional countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and Pakistan in rice exports despite lack of technology.

At present, the Myanmar government is encouraging farmers to raise productivity and boost rice export.
