Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 18 rejected a joint statement of nine countries on the country’s upcoming general election, stating that such statement affected the peaceful environment the Myanmar people have built to ensure the success of the election.

The embassies of Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Norway, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States issued a joint statement on September 14, expressing concern that religion would be used as “a tool of division and conflict during the campaign season”.

The foreign ministry criticised the nine-country statement for prejudicing the situation and potentially create misunderstanding and doubt based on ethnicity and religion.

The Union Election Commission has established the mechanism to address any issues that may arise during the process in accordance with laws and rules, the ministry said.

The general election is scheduled to take place on November 8 with the participation of 92 political parties and over 300 independent candidates.-VNA
