The Union Election Commission (UEC) of Myanmar on October 13 hosted a meeting with the country’s ten largest political parties to discuss whether or not to postpone the general elections scheduled for November 8 because of recent floods and landslides.
The Myanmar Times said that chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi opposed the postponement, while the three others, including the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) supported the idea.
No decision was announced at the conclusion of the meeting. However, UEC is authorised to give a final decision of the issue whether political parties agree or not.
