Hanoi (VNA) – Chairman of Myanmar’s Parliament Shwe Mann said on January 6 that members of Aung San Suu Kyi’s victorious National League for Democracy will take office in parliament on February 1.
The event will open up a new era for a nation under army rule for decades, he said.
In a statement he said all parliament members (MPs) will start the new parliament at 10 am (local time) on February 1. However, the new government will take office later and can only be formed after current President Thein Sein resigns on March 31.
First on the MPs' agenda is choosing a new president. The parliament will select the president from three candidates nominated by the upper and lower houses and the military.
The constitution which was drafted by the military bars Suu Kyi from the role because she married and had children with a foreigner.
The new government is expected to take office in March.-VNA
