During the three-day talks from August 15-17, the government agreed tothe establishment of a federal system guaranteeing the rights ofdemocracy, equality and self-determination. Meanwhile, the armed groupsaccepted the government’s consistent principles of non-disintegration ofthe union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuationof sovereignty.
The two sides agreed to continuetalks in September on the remaining points in the ceasefire accord –which could be signed in October.
The currentgovernment in Myanmar , which took office in March 2011, hasvigorously pushed the process of national reconciliation. It hasrealised ceasefire with 14 out of the 16 ethnic armed groups.-VNA
