Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi appointed as state counselor

Hanoi (VNA) – Leader of the National League for Democracy (LND) Aung San Suu Kyi has become Myanmar’s state counselor in accordance with the state counselor bill signed by President U Htin Kyaw on April 6.

Presidential Office spokesman U Zaw Htay told media that the bill was signed by President U Htin Kyaw and submitted to the Union Parliament. It was approved by both Houses of Nationalities (Upper House) and House of Representatives (Lower House) on April 1 and April 5, respectively.

The bill which includes five chapters and eight articles gives the LND’s leader the right to contact government ministries, departments, organisation, and individuals for counsel. She is responsible for her duty to the Union Parliament.

On March 30, Suu Kyi was appointed as Foreign of Minister cum Minister at the President's Office, Education Minister and Minister of Electric Power and Energy. 

However, Myanmar’s Union Parliament on April 5 passed President U Htin Kyaw’s proposal on the substitution of Suu Kyi’s two positions. Accordingly, Myo Thein Gyi was named as Minister of Education and Pe Zin Tun as Minister of Electric Power and Energy.

Aung San Suu Kyi currently holds the positions as Foreign Minister and Minister at the Presidential Office.

In addition, she was appointed as chairperson of the Joint Coordination Committee for Development of Parliamentary Affairs by the Lower House.-VNA
