Da Nang (VNA) – More than 2,000 people engagedin a programme to clean beaches in Da Nang on September 28.
The programme, part of activities to respond to the “CleanUp the World” Campaign 2019, aims to collect trash around Tho Quang fishingport, one of the most polluted areas of Da Nang.
It is expected to raise public awareness of the harmfulnessof plastic waste to the economy, society, environment and people’s health,while calling for the community to reduce plastic waste for a greenerenvironment.
Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Le Trung Chinhsaid that Da Nang has faced many problems in managing and treating domesticsolid waste and deal with hotspots in environment.
In recent years, the amount of domestic solid waste in DaNang has risen rapidly to over 1,100 tonne per day, while the ratio of plasticwaste also increased about 5-14 percent, he noted.
Meanwhile, infrastructure system serving the collection andtreatment of solid waste in the city has yet to meet requirements, said Chinh.
He also called on all localities, agencies, organizations,businesses and individuals in the city to join hands in building a green andclean city with specific and practical actions.
The“Clean Up the World” campaign was first launched byAustralia in 1993 and has become a global campaign responded by more than 130countries around the world.
In Vietnam, the Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironment has chosen “local actions, global influence” as the theme for the2019 campaign, focusing on reducing plastic waste.
Vietnam aims for all urban supermarkets, market and shopsfree from single-use plastic products in 2021, and a country without disposableplastic products in 2025.
On the occasion, the ministry presented 30 bins for trashsorting to Da Nang city./.
