Hanoi (VNA) – New PrimeMinister of Malaysia MahathirMohamad on May 14 announced a scheme to revamp the country’s anti-corruptionagency while affirming his determination to investigate all alleged crimescommitted by the previous government.
The PM told thepress on May 14 that he will appoint new heads of the anti-corruption agencyand the Justice Ministry, saying he hopes to finalise key positions of the newCabinet this week.
The leader alsoinstructed Malaysian agencies not to take out or destroy documents tofacilitate investigations when necessary. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Financewas asked to review the budget in order to reduce the government expenses.
Since he was swornin as Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Mahathir announced the list of heads of threeout of ten key ministries in the Cabinet, comprising the Ministries of HomeAffairs, Defence and Finance.
Mahathir Mohamadwas officially sworn in as Prime Minister of Malaysia on May 10 after a shockelection victory, 15 years after he stood down. The 92-year-old man, who hadgoverned for more than two decades, became the world's oldest elected leader.
He came out of retirement and defected to the opposition to take on and beatformer protege Najib Razak. His historic win ousted the Barisan Nasional (BN)coalition, which has been in power since independence in 1957.
Official results showed that Mahathir's Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) hadwon 113 of the parliament's 222 seats, exceeding the simple majority requiredto rule.
Meanwhile, the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional headed by former PrimeMinister Najib Razak won only 79 seats.
Mahathir served as Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003.-VNA
