Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) (the Islamic Party of Malaysia) has decided notto support the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in the Semenyih by-election, Selangor state,said Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on February 16.
The Malaysian leader revealed this information when answering questions relatedto his meeting with PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on February 15, wherethey talked about politics and signed an agreement.
With Mahathir’s disclosure, the Pakatan Harapan, or Pact of Hope (PH), where Mahathir is President, is likely to dominatein the upcoming additional election in Semenyih town.
The by-election was called following the death of Parti PribumiBersatu Malaysia’s Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, who won the seat by near 9,000 votes inMay last year. He died of a heart attack on January 11.
According to the Election Commission of Malaysia, an early voting will takeplace on February 26, while the official ballot is set on March 2. This is thesixth by-election in Malaysia since the 14th general election (GE14) in May2018.
The previous by-elections, especially the voting in the CameronHighlands on January 26, the National Front (BN) led by UMNO, always receivedthe support from PAS. -VNA
