Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The Malaysian Metrological Department on April 12 started activities to make artificial rain in its northern region in order to cope with prolonged hot weather.

People in the country’s northern areas are suffering from prolonged hot weather over the past month due to El Nino, causing several outbreaks of disease.

According to the metrological department, water levels of Bukit Merah lake in Perak state and Bukit Kwong dam in Kelantan state were below 50 percent of their capacity as of April 12.

The spokesman for the department said the artificial rain-making initiative will be jointly done by the department and the air force. The one-week activity will be carried out in four states, including Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis.

General Director of the Malaysia National Disaster Management Agency Zaitun Ab Samad asserted the situation has not reached crisis level as many states still have enough reserved water for daily use.

However, she highlighted that authorised bodies should be at the ready to create artificial rain in some particular areas.-VNA
