A protest against Lynas Corporation in 2012 (Source: EPA)Sydney (VNA) – The Malaysian parliament has asked the newgovernment to launch a wide-ranging investigation into environmental and nuclear waste processingproblems related to Australianmining company Lynas Corporation.
According to Australia’s SBS mediaagency, the firm has been processing rare-earth minerals, which containrare-earth elements used in high-tech products including computers and electriccars, in Malaysia since the start of 2013.
The Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) on theeast coast of Malaysia has long been the focus of residents and environmentalprotesters who are concerned about the management of low-level nuclear wastegenerated during processing.
Lynas runs two rare earth exploitationplants in Malaysia and West Australia. The rare earth elements dug up inAustralia by Western-Australian based Lynas are shipped to markets around theworld including China, after processing in Malaysia.
In a statement to SBS News, LynasCorporation said they had been operating safely in Malaysia for more than fiveyears in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
"As a lawful and transparent business, wehold ourselves to a high standard on all aspects of our business and willcooperate with the government with confidence in our performance," saidthe statement.-VNA
