KualaLumpur (VNA) – Controlwill be tightened at VIP lanes at airports across Malaysia to prevent VIPs and politicians from abusing their privilegeand smuggling items into the country, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Speakingat the Parliament on October 17, Anthony said there are weaknesses in thepresention system and there are no customs or immigration personnel at the VIPlanes.
Inthe coming time, Malaysian authorities will tighten control at the VIP lanesand place personnel there will conduct checks so that there will be noexceptions.
Theminister’s statement came after there was a report claiming that an agencyrelated to the former Prime Minister's Department had brought in 49 million ringgitthrough VIP lanes.
Meanwhile,any civilian bringing in more than 41,000 ringgit must declare to the CustomsDepartment and obtain permission from Bank Negara to bring in the cash.
Lastmonth, Datuk Shahul Hamid Abdul Rahim, former head of immigration operations atKuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), confirmed that it was a commonpractice among VIPs and senior officials, who travelled on private jets, tosmuggle cash into the country.-VNA
