KualaLumpur (VNA) – The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) hasformed a group to probe the pirate attack on a tanker carrying 3.8 millionlitres of diesel owned by a Thai company in waters off Kuantan, Malaysia onJune 23.
Ina statement on June 27, Zulkifili Abu Bakar, Director General of the MMEA saidthe agency had contacted the Thailand Maritime Enforcement Coordinating Centre toinvestigate the case.
TheMMEA has also worked with agencies of neighbouring countries, includingIndonesia’s Tau Armada Command and the Singapore Police Coast Guard as theagency believes it is a cross border crime.
Allsides can share information and intelligence to prevent similar cases and helpwith the investigation, he added.
Accordingto the MMEA, the attack occurred on June 23 when the tanker was en route fromSingapore to Songkhla, southern Thailand.
Theattackers threatened the captain and crew members with guns and knives before destroyingthe ship’s communication system. They stole about 1.5 million litres of oilthen left. All 17 members of the ship were unhurt.-VNA
