Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia has appointed Federal Court judge TengkuMaimun Tuan Mat as its first ever female chief justice, according to the PrimeMinister's Office.
The appointment was made following the approval of the King of Malaysia.
The appointment of Tengku Maimun as Chief Justice was effective from May 2,according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Tengky Maimun replaced previous Chief Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum who retiredafter serving 27 years in the judiciary
According to the judiciary’s website, Tengku Maimun started her judicial careeras a judicial commissioner at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 2, 2006.
She was appointed a High Court judge on September 5, 2007, before becoming aCourt of Appeal judge on January 8, 2013. She was further promoted as a FederalCourt judge on November 26, 2018.
The Chief Justice of Malaysia, also known as the Chief Justice of the FederalCourt, is the highest position of the Malaysian judiciary system.-VNA
