Malaysia: 1,000 soldiers deployed for ASEAN summit security

At least 1,000 Malaysian soldiers have been stationed around the Klang Valley region to ensure security for the 27 th ASEAN Summit and related meetings scheduled for November 18-22 in the country.

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – At least 1,000 Malaysian soldiers have been stationed around the Klang Valley region to ensure security for the 27 th ASEAN Summit and related meetings scheduled for November 18-22 in the country.

Malaysian Armed Forces Chief Tan Sri ZulkefliMohdZin said the soldiers deployed are part of reserve unitswho are on standby to support the police during the regional summit.

Zulkefli added that he had already spoken to Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on security measures to be taken.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said security measures at the ASEAN Summit would be strengthened in the context of terrorist attacks in Paris on No vember 13.

The 27th ASEAN Summit is scheduled to adopt the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on setting up the ASEAN Community and on the ASEAN Community Vision to 2025.

ASEAN, which groups 10 nations - Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - is the 7th largest economy in the world with a total GDP of 2.5 trillion USD.-VNA
