Vientiane (VNA) - Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw has made an one-day state visit to Laos at the invitation of President Bounnhang Vorachit.

U Htin Kyaw visited Laos to introduce himself after he was sworn into office as the President of Myanmar in March, and to enhance the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.

During their talks on May 6, the two presidents expressed their please at and highly valued the outcomes of cooperation between the two countries and discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest.

They agreed to strengthen the realisation of the agreement reached by the Laos-Myanmar, Myanmar-Laos Joint Commission for Cooperation at its 11th meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw in March last year, which vowed to enhance political and security cooperation.

The two sides also discussed the promotion of trade, investment, education and tourism cooperation, and the possibility of launching direct flights between Vientiane and Yangon or between Luang Prabang and Bagan.

President U Htin Kyaw received a courtesy visit from Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, while Myanmar State Counsellor, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister to the President's Office Aung San Suu Kyi met Vice President of the Lao National Assembly Somphanh Phengkhammy.

Laos and Myanmar established diplomatic ties in July 1955.-VNA
