LaiChau (VNA) – The Border Guard of the northern mountainous provinceof Lai Chau has presented 166 scholarships worth a total of 500 million VND(21,500 USD) to poor students in the province’s border localities.
Accordingto Colonel Nguyen Tat Hau, the scholarships are part of a programme launched bythe Border Guard High Command to support local disadvantaged children incontinuing with their studies.
Theprogramme has called on each border post, unit, and provincial Border GuardHeadquarter leader to sponsor at least two students, who will receive 500,000VND to 1 million VND each month.
Furthermore,the provincial Border Guard Headquarters has mobilised assistance from socialorganisations and donors both within and outside the province to buildclassrooms and boarding houses, and buy equipment for students in these areas.
Accordingto the unit, by the end of 2018, the Border Guard force of Vietnam sponsored2,546 students, with the Border Guard of Lai Chau taking care of 61 students.
Since2014, the programme has supported the construction of 17 classrooms and fiveboarding houses for local students, as well as an access bridge with the totalcost of 3.9 billion VND, in addition to many studying supplies, playgroundequipment, and blankets for students in border-area schools.–VNA
