Kien Giang (VNA) – The Mekong Deltaprovince of Kien Giang has taken a range of comprehensive measures to fightagainst smuggling through the Vietnam-Cambodia border.
Local authorities have tightened monitoring alongboth the land and sea border, particularly at Ha Tien international bordergate in Ha Tien township and Giang Thanh national border gate in Giang Thanhdistrict.
Inspections have been in place on cross-bordertracks and waterways while check points were set up and patrols have beenconducted to prevent illegal transport of goods across the Vietnam–Cambodiaborder.
Chairman of the provincial People’s CommitteePham Vu Hong said the province has strengthened the fight against cross-bordersmuggling and trade fraud to protect domestic production and consumers’ rights.
The provincial People’s Committee requested relevant agencies tobuild plans to crack down smugglingrings, trade fraud and counterfeit goods, he said.
Communication campaigns have been carried out tooraise public awareness of the impact of smuggling, particularly for those in borderareas.
According to the Kien Giang Department ofCustoms, smuggling and trade fraud have seen complicated developments along inthe Vietnam-Cambodia border. Most of the smuggled goods are Thailand-producedsugar, cigarettes, fruits and cosmetics.
Kien Giang shares almost 60 kilometres of landborder with Cambodia. So far this year, the provincial authorities have inspectedover 800 cases, imposed fines on 250 cases, collecting nearly 4.5 billion VND(198,000 USD) for the state budget.-VNA
