New York (VNA) – Energy transition, environmentalprotection and climate change response are the inevitable paths to achieving sustainabledevelopment, affirmed Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Vietnam’s PermanentRepresentative to the United Nations (UN).

Giang made the statement at an April 19 conference titled ‘ArchitectingFinancing for the Energy Transition in Asia and the Pacific – Lessons fromIndonesia’s and Vietnam’s Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs)’ – a sideevent of the 2023 UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on Financingfor Development. Co-organised by the permanent missions of Vietnam andIndonesia and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP),the conference saw the participation of nearly 80 delegates from countries, theprivate sector, and UN organisations.

In his remarks, the Vietnamese diplomat said Vietnam hasjoined international partners to set up JETP, initially mobilising 15.5 billionUSD within the next three to five years to serve Vietnam's energy transitionefforts.

Vietnam’s JETP implementation process, which faces myriadchallenges in terms of ensuring energy security and fairness, has prompted theSoutheast Asian nation to amend its laws and policies on socio-economic andtechnology to meet associated requirements, Giang noted.

He informed participants that Vietnam, however, is carryingout necessary measures serving JETP including codifying the PoliticalDeclaration on establishing the JETP; and establishing a secretariat and devisinga resource mobilisation plan with the participation of the entire politicalsystem and other stakeholders.

The ambassador called on international partners tofulfill their commitments and provide resources and finance for energy transition – such as non-refundable grants, capacity building support, sharing ofadvances, research into the potential of renewable energy, and assistance andinvestment in programmes and projects that contribute to sustainabledevelopment so that Vietnam can achieve its climate goals.

At the conference, participants said the implementation of the JETPswill create a basis to launch similar supportive relationships helping developingnations mobilise resources for the transition./.
