Joint working group to be formed to probe former Thai PM

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) of Thailand is setting up a joint working group with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) to probe charges against former Premier Yingluck Shinawatra in relation to the rice pledging case.

The move came after the OAGfailed to prosecute Yingluck in the controversial scheme, citinginsufficient evidence. The decision has prompted the NACC to call ameeting with the OAG, resulted in the setting up of a joint panel toproceed with the charges within 14 days.

The two independentpublic agencies held a meeting on September 9 to discuss the formationof the panel, which will compile additional evidence supportingallegations of fraud against the former premier.

NACC SecretaryGeneral Sansern Poljiak said if the joint working group fails to reach aconclusion that proves satisfactory to both agencies, the NACC willeither file legal action against Yingluck or will appoint a lawyer tofile the charges.

The commission has charged the former PM ofmalfeasance for her negligence to stop corruption in the rice pledgingscheme in accordance with Article 157 of the Criminal Code and forbreaking the anti-corruption law.-VNA
