Japanese PM’s Vietnam visit to bolster bilateral ties: Official

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide’s upcoming visit to Vietnam is hoped to contribute to promoting cooperation towards post-pandemic economic recovery developing a forward-looking relationship between the two countries, and strengthening bilateral cooperation in addressing regional issues, said a Japanese official on October 16.

– Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide’s upcoming visit to Vietnam is hoped to contributeto promoting cooperation towards post-pandemic economic recovery, developing aforward-looking relationship between the two countries, and strengthening bilateralcooperation in addressing regional issues, said a Japanese official on October 16.

Talking to Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent at a press conference in Tokyo, the Japanese Foreign Ministry’s official revealed why Suga choosesVietnam as a destination in his first overseas trip after taking office.

The first reason is that the strategic partnership betweenJapan and Vietnam is developing very strongly, and the second is that Vietnam,as the Chair of ASEAN 2020, is playing an important role in Japan's foreign policytowards ASEAN, he said.

During his visit, PM Suga could make a commitment that Tokyo will take the leadin contributing to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, and   affirmJapan's full support for the “the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), the official said.
According to the Japanese Ministry ofForeign Affairs, PM Suga and his spouse will pay visits to Vietnam and Indonesia fromOctober 18 to 21.
In Vietnam, the Japanese leader isexpected to have meetings with Party General Secretary and President Nguyen PhuTrong and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and hold talks withPrime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

He will also address students of the Vietnam-Japan University and participatein other activities./.
