Hanoi (VNA) - The Japanese Government on May 24 announced a non-refundable emergency aid worth 2.5 million USD for Vietnam to address drought and saltwater intrusion consequences in the central and Mekong Delta regions since late 2014 due to the effects of El Niño.
The aid will be delivered through the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), according to the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam.
The aid will be spent to support hard-hit areas with clean water, sanitation and food, based on the situation and damages caused by the drought and saltwater intrusion, such as reduced agricultural production, a lack of fresh water and food, and malnourished women and children.
Japan will cooperate with Vietnam to quickly deploy the aid, as well as consider cooperation concerning responsive measures in the medium and long terms on the issue.-VNA
